News and views

Firstly my apologies again to Lew Palmer for getting the name of the company wrong in the piece about rear lighting in the last issue – it should have been www.brittrix.com

On future events later this month is the Triple M Register Norfolk Tour from 7th to 11th September – at least one D is already entered. Details on the Triple M Register website. At the time of writing there were still some vacancies; contact 1942mgman@gmail.com for an entry form.

On future events too note that the date for the PreWar Shelsley meeting next year is now on the 18th September 2027.

July saw the annual Grimsthorpe Speed Trials in Lincolnshire and a regular entry was Mike Jakeman in D0427 pictured here stood next to his car.

This was taken in the ‘paddock’ area and on the left is the R Type re-creation by Geoff Enoch and on the right Malcolm Beer’s K3 – august company!

The only D spotted at the VSCC Short Course meeting at Prescott on 1st & 2nd August was Huw Davies’ D0353 pictured here.

This was taken later on the Sunday in the parched Orchard car park which had been set aside for prewar cars all weekend.

Now for a mystery photo I’ve come across, my apologies if I’ve raised this before as I can’t remember where it came from!

From the reference this is probably D0393, a non-survivor, but whilst the front half is all very much D Type the back half has been much modified to look J2-ish! If anyone has any information please let me know.

Cars for sale

Following the falling demand for prewar cars in the last few years a few D Types have been spotted as for sale in addition to those we have featured. Firstly, seen as for sale by a trader in Car & Classic magazine for July is D0259 at a hefty £26,995.

This is the car that spent much time at the factory whilst we believe they experimented with the back end as in the picture.

Recently seen on Facebook as for sale is D0291.

This car has been much modified but has some prewar trials history

A number of you notified me of D0493 which was entered for the July Mathewsons Auction (the Bangers and Cash people!) this has been with one owner for many years – see Dispatch 6 where the owner traced the first owner of the car and drove it to Scotland to show him!

The estimate was £8,000 to £9,000 and the hammer price on the day was £10,600; a modest price for a tidy running car even in today’s market.

Bits and Pieces

Haydon Edwards has two rebuilt gearboxes for sale for the Morris Minor/MG. The first has the propshaft brake and has been totally rebuilt with 4 new layshaft bushes, 2 new layshafts, and new bearings etc. 2 pictures herewith:

Gearbox 2 has no propshaft brake and is for the later Minor/MG and has also been rebuilt with new layshafts, layshaft bushes and bearings etc. Pics herewith:

Price is £250 each plus carriage. For full details and more pictures of both rebuilds contact Haydon direct. haydon.s.edwards@gmail.com

A reminder I still have for sale a pair of new door catch plates in stainless steel, a brand new totally correct instrument panel and a tandem wiper set. See previous Dispatch for details or email me.

For those collecting an original tool kit for the D I have a small grease gun for sale which we believe is the correct one for the prop shaft grease nipples (the lubrication system uses oil of course and has its own oil gun) picture here.

Price is £5 plus postage. ted@mgdgroup.org If anyone needs details of the tools issued with the D Type please contact me.

Finally some of you may not be aware that every MG, certainly in the thirties, left Abingdon with a guarantee form.

Maybe because of their size, 10” x 15”, very few have survived. We have produced exact replicas on correct card and in original colours as shown here:

The shading where the Car No. (Chassis number) and Engine No. is entered is as originally there and we believe it was to make alterations difficult for obvious reasons!

Details were originally typed in but your own details can be entered by black pen. If you don’t have them I can provide dates for D Types, other models dates can be obtained from the Triple M Register.

Price is £11, which includes for a large diameter postal tube, plus postage (£3.95 by Evri Tracked in the UK). Limited number.
