The Beginning
The MG D Type Midget was built between October 1931 and May 1932 at the famous MG works at Abingdon on Thames. Only 250 examples were made and the chassis were numbered from D0251 to D0500. The first 100 chassis had a 7 foot wheelbase whilst the final 150 were 7 foot 2 inches.
The D was developed from two earlier MG models. The chassis itself was based on the C Type racing Midget whilst the engine was virtually the same as that used in the earlier, very successful, M Type Midget; an 847cc overhead cam engine with a single SU carburettor.
Of the 250, 208 were four seater tourers, 37 salonettes or coupe (small 2 door saloons) and 5 chassis went to specialist coach builders; 3 to Stiles and 2 to Jarvis.
Basically the idea was to give the family man four seats but in a sports type body. Unfortunately the extra weight of the body over that of the M made the engine struggle especially with only a three speed gearbox as standard and sales proved difficult and hence the relatively small production run.
